How to Get Your Moroccan Passport – Complete 2026 Guide

Introduction

The issuance of a biometric passport is an essential step for any Moroccan citizen wishing to travel or update their identity documents. Whether it is a first application or a renewal, understanding the administrative procedures helps avoid mistakes and delays.

If you have just obtained your Moroccan nationality certificate, we also recommend applying for your national identity card at the same time as your passport.

The steps from making an appointment to collecting your passport

The biometric passport application can be submitted in person at the consulate or with the competent Moroccan authorities.

Step 1 – Make an appointment at the consulate

You cannot go directly to the consulate without an appointment, as passport and national ID card applications are handled by appointment only.

You can book an appointment online directly on the consulate’s website.

Please note that if you have not already done so, you will need to complete your consular registration. Consular registration allows you to be registered with the consulate; a certificate will be issued to confirm that you are a registered Moroccan citizen legally residing in the host country. This is a mandatory prerequisite.

Once your appointment request has been completed (do not forget to upload the required documents online), your file will be reviewed. You will then receive a message allowing you to schedule your appointment at the consulate within a few days, depending on processing times.

Step 2 – Prepare the supporting documents for your application file

The documents required for a Moroccan passport application vary depending on the situation:

You will also need to complete a biometric passport application form.

You can download it here or find it directly on the consulate’s website.

Step 3 – Submit your application in person at the consulate

When you receive your appointment confirmation email, do not forget to print the attached PDF, which serves as your appointment confirmation.

On the day of your appointment, remember to bring your bank card or cash, as you will have to pay a fee for the stamp.

Go to the consulate on the day of your appointment, ask for a ticket at the reception desk, and wait in the waiting room until your number is called.

Allow more than one hour. If it is busy, it may take between 2 and 3 hours, especially if this is your first Moroccan passport application.

You will be guided throughout the entire administrative process. At each step, carefully check the information on the documents and make sure there are no spelling mistakes. If someone is accompanying you, ask them to proofread the documents as well. If an error goes unnoticed, you will have to start the whole process again, so it is better to review each document twice.

The final step is when your fingerprints will be taken. Once the process is completed, you will be given a receipt. This document is very important: take good care of it and keep it in a safe place so that you do not lose it. It is partly thanks to this document that you will be able to return to the consulate to collect your passport once it is ready.

They will inform you of the expected waiting time. If they do not, do not hesitate to ask. At Moroccan Papers, we observe a waiting period of about three weeks for a first application.

Step 4 – Your passport is ready

You have received an email informing you that your passport is ready and that you can come to collect it. Do not forget to bring your old passport in the case of a renewal, as it will have to be returned.

The passport must be collected by the holder or by their legal representative (supporting documents will be required). You will be asked to check the information on the passport once again. Do not forget to verify the date of birth: people sometimes forget to carefully check the day, month, and year. Once all the information has been verified, you will have to sign and date your application receipt, then sign the passport delivery register.

The documents required to collect a passport are as follows:

  • The receipt for the submission of the passport application

  • The identity card of the person collecting the passport

Special cases:

  • If the person who wishes to collect the passport is a minor: the father or the mother (if she holds parental authority) may do so.

  • If the person is under guardianship: only the legal guardian may collect the passport, unless there is a written power of attorney in the name of a third party.

Warning: you have six months from the date your application is submitted to collect your passport. After this deadline, the passport will be destroyed and you will have to submit a new application.

Questions fréquentes

What is the validity period of a Moroccan passport?

The biometric passport is valid for 5 years for people over the age of three and for 3 years for children under the age of three.

Where can you obtain a tax stamp?

If you live abroad, you can purchase your tax stamp directly at the Moroccan consulate or embassy when you submit your passport application.

My passport will expire soon — can I still use it to travel?

It depends on your destination country.

  • Some countries accept a passport that is valid only until your return date.

  • However, most countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months at the time of entry.

  • If you are traveling to a country that requires a visa, allow extra time, as this validity condition is generally mandatory to obtain it.

It is therefore strongly recommended to renew your passport before departure if it has less than six months of validity remaining.

Can a photocopy of an original document replace the original?

No, if the list of supporting documents requires you to provide an original document, a photocopy is very likely to be refused.

Can I ask someone to collect my passport on my behalf?

No, the passport must be collected in person by the applicant.

  • For adults, the applicant’s presence is mandatory. No power of attorney is allowed.

  • For minors, the passport may be collected by the legal representative (father, mother, or guardian), but the child’s presence may be required depending on their age.

  • In all cases, the old passport (if applicable) and an identity document must be presented when collecting the passport.
