How to get your Moroccan National Identity Card ?

Introduction

The issuance of the Electronic National Identity Card (CNIE) is an essential step for any Moroccan citizen wishing to officially prove their identity. Whether it is a first application or a renewal, understanding the administrative procedures helps avoid mistakes and delays.

If you have just obtained your Moroccan nationality certificate, we also recommend submitting your passport application at the same time as your Moroccan identity card application.

What is a CNIE?

The CNIE is an official document that allows any Moroccan citizen to prove their identity and, as long as it is valid, their Moroccan nationality.

  • It is mandatory for all citizens aged 16 and over.

  • Minors over the age of 12 may, when applying for a passport, obtain a CNIE under the same conditions as adults.

The steps from making an appointment to collecting your Moroccan identity card

The application for an identity card can be submitted in person at the consulate or to the competent Moroccan authorities.

Step 1 – Make an appointment at the consulate

You cannot go directly to the consulate without an appointment, as passport and identity card applications are handled by appointment only.

You can book an appointment online directly on the consulate’s website.

Please note that if you have not already done so, you will need to complete your consular registration. Consular registration allows you to be registered with the consulate; a certificate will be issued to you confirming that you are a registered Moroccan citizen legally residing in the host country. This is a mandatory prerequisite.

Once your appointment request has been completed (do not forget to upload the required documents online), your file will be reviewed. You will then receive a message allowing you to schedule your appointment at the consulate, within a few days depending on processing times.

Step 2 – Prepare the supporting documents for your application file

The supporting documents required to apply for a Moroccan identity card are as follows:

  • Consular registration certificate specifying the address of residence in Morocco

  • One of the following three supporting documents (if you have all of them, bring them just in case):

    • A copy of the page of the applicant’s family record book showing the applicant’s full parentage in Arabic and French, with presentation of the original family book* (Note: the old identity and civil status booklet is no longer accepted)

    • A full copy of the birth certificate

    • An extract of the birth certificate

Four passport photos (to find out the standards, please refer to this official PDF)

Moroccan nationality certificate for foreigners who have acquired this nationality and for children born to a foreign father and a Moroccan mother before April 2, 2007.

Step 3 – Submit your application in person at the consulate

When you receive the appointment confirmation email, do not forget to print the attached PDF, which serves as your appointment confirmation.

On the day of the appointment, remember to bring your bank card or cash, as you will have to pay a fee for the stamp.

Go to the consulate on the day of your appointment, ask for a ticket at the reception desk, and wait in the waiting room until your number is called.

Allow more than one hour. If it is busy, it may take between 2 and 3 hours, especially if this is your first Moroccan identity card application.

You will be guided throughout the entire administrative process. At each step, carefully check the information on the documents and make sure there are no spelling mistakes. If someone is accompanying you, ask them to proofread the documents as well. If an error goes unnoticed, you will have to start the whole process again, so it is better to review each document twice.

The final step is when your fingerprints will be taken. Once the process is completed, you will be given a receipt. This document is very important: take good care of it and keep it in a safe place so that you do not lose it. It is partly thanks to this document that you will be able to return to the consulate to collect your Moroccan identity card once it is ready.

They will inform you of the expected waiting time. If they do not, do not hesitate to ask. At Moroccan Papers, we observe a waiting period of about 1 to 2 months for a first application.

Step 4 – Your Moroccan identity card is ready

You have received an email informing you that your identity card is ready and that you can come to collect it. Do not forget to bring your old identity card in the case of a renewal, as it will have to be returned.

Very often, the email informing you that your card has arrived is not sent. Therefore, allow a period of three weeks from the date you submitted your application and go to your consulate to ask whether your CNIE card has arrived.

The identity card must be collected by the holder or by their legal representative (supporting documents will be required). You will be asked to check the information on the identity card once again.

Do not forget to verify the date of birth: people sometimes forget to carefully check the day, month, and year. Once all the information has been verified, you will have to sign and date your application receipt, then sign the CNIE delivery register.

The documents required to collect an identity card are as follows:

  • The receipt for the submission of the identity card application

  • The French identity card of the person collecting the Moroccan identity card

Special cases:

  • If the person who wishes to collect the Moroccan identity card is a minor: the father or the mother (if she holds parental authority) may do so.

  • If the person is under guardianship: only the legal guardian may collect the Moroccan identity card, unless there is a written power of attorney in the name of a third party.

Warning: you have a period of six months from the date your application is submitted to collect your Moroccan identity card. After this deadline, the Moroccan identity card will be destroyed and you will have to submit a new application.
