Checklist of supporting documents based on your situation

Case No. 1: By descent (Article 6 of the Moroccan Nationality Code)

Moroccan nationality is transmitted to any child whose mother or father is Moroccan.

This applies even if the child is born abroad. Since the 2007 reform, Moroccan mothers can pass on nationality to their children in the same way as fathers.

Supporting documents if the mother is Moroccan:

  • A written request from the mother

  • A written request from the child (applicant) if they are an adult (in addition to the mother's request)

  • A copy of the Moroccan mother’s national identity card

  • The parents’ marriage certificate

  • The mother’s full birth certificate

  • The child’s full birth certificate or birth certificate. This document must be translated into Arabic and then legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or apostilled

  • Two recent passport photos

Supporting documents if the father is Moroccan:

  • A written request from the father

  • A written request from the child (applicant) if they are an adult (in addition to the father’s request)

  • The child’s full birth certificate or birth certificate. This document must be translated into Arabic and then legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or apostilled

  • A certificate of non-registration in the civil status registers

  • The child’s parents’ marriage certificate

  • The father’s full birth certificate

  • The mother’s full birth certificate

Case No. 2 – By marriage (Article 10 of the Moroccan Nationality Code)

A foreign national married to a Moroccan citizen may apply for Moroccan nationality after five (5) years of effective cohabitation, starting from the date of marriage.

The application is subject to the discretion of the Moroccan authorities, who may accept or refuse naturalization even if all conditions are met.

Marriage to a Moroccan citizen does not automatically grant nationality, but it opens the right to a simplified naturalization procedure, provided that the applicant:

  • Can prove real and continuous cohabitation with the Moroccan spouse

  • Has legal residence in Morocco for a sufficient period

  • Demonstrates integration into Moroccan society

Supporting documents to be provided:

  • Moroccan marriage certificate (legalized)

  • Moroccan residence permit

  • Certificate of residence (issued by the district office or administrative annex)

  • Copy of the passport (identity pages, visas, and residence pages)

  • Applicant’s birth certificate (translated into Arabic and legalized)

  • Criminal record from the country of origin (translated and legalized) as well as from Morocco (to be requested from the court)

  • Applicant’s employment certificate or any document proving income

  • Two recent passport photos

  • Medical certificate

Case No. 3 – By naturalization (Article 11 of the Moroccan Nationality Code)

A foreign national may apply for Moroccan nationality by naturalization if they meet a set of strict conditions laid down by Moroccan law.

Naturalization is a voluntary procedure granted on an exceptional basis by the Moroccan State after review of the application. It is never automatic, even if all conditions are met:

  • Have habitual, legal, and continuous residence in Morocco for at least 5 years prior to submitting the application

  • Be of legal age at the time of application

  • Be physically and mentally fit

  • Have good moral character and not have been convicted of:

    • A terrorism-related offense

    • A violation of laws on legal residence

    • Or acts resulting in loss of commercial capacity

  • Have sufficient knowledge of the Arabic language

  • Have sufficient means of subsistence (stable income, employment, etc.)

Supporting documents to be provided:

  • A handwritten application clearly expressing the wish to obtain Moroccan nationality

  • Birth certificate (translated into Arabic and legalized)

  • Criminal record from the country of origin (translated and legalized) and from Morocco (to be requested from the court)

  • Certificate of residence in Morocco proving continuous presence for at least 5 years

  • Medical certificate issued by a Moroccan doctor (physical and mental condition)

  • Certificate or proof of sufficient means of subsistence (pay slips, employment contract, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions

How to prepare an application file for Moroccan nationality from France?

There are several ways to prepare your Moroccan nationality application from France. You can choose to do it entirely on your own, based on the information available on the consulate’s website. In this case, it is important to prepare all the documents before traveling to Rabat to submit your application, as originals are often required.

You may also choose one of our support services to secure and simplify your process. To learn more, visit the page dedicated to applying for a Moroccan nationality certificate.

Where should you submit the supporting documents to obtain a Moroccan nationality certificate?

You must submit the supporting documents directly in Rabat, Morocco. Several administrative offices must be visited during the process. We recommend planning a stay of at least 15 days, as some steps require multiple visits and waiting times can be long.

Also be mindful of public holidays and festive periods: offices may be closed for several consecutive days, which can delay your application.

Do you need to go to Morocco to apply for Moroccan nationality?

Yes, in 99% of cases you must travel to Morocco to submit an application for a Moroccan nationality certificate.

The only exception is to use a specialized service such as the one we offer at Moroccan Papers, which allows you to complete the process without having to go to Morocco.

Can a photocopy of an original document replace the original?

No, if the list of supporting documents specifies that an original document is required, a simple photocopy is very likely to be refused. We therefore recommend obtaining several original copies of certain documents.

For example, request two or three birth certificates when you go to the town hall, so that you do not run out during the different stages of the procedure once in Morocco.

Can you apply for Moroccan nationality if only one of your parents is Moroccan?

Yes, the Moroccan Nationality Code provides for the granting of nationality if one of your parents is Moroccan (except in exceptional cases).

How long does it take to obtain a Moroccan nationality certificate?

It mainly depends on how complete your documents are and how well prepared you are before traveling to Morocco. Some people can obtain their certificate within 15 days, while others may wait 3 to 6 months or even longer, especially if the file is complex and you are not assisted.

How can I check that my Moroccan nationality application file is complete?

To make sure your application file is complete, it is strongly recommended to be assisted by someone who is familiar with the different steps and required documents. In Morocco, public scribes can guide you through this process.

At Moroccan Papers, we provide you with a public scribe who can support you throughout your Moroccan nationality certificate application. To learn more, visit our page dedicated to applying for a Moroccan nationality certificate.
